![]() ![]() The question of legacy animates Rebecca Makkai’s The Great Believers, a heartbreaking meditation on AIDS, loss, and friendship. Its members have since gone on to achieve if not more lasting then certainly more personally satisfying legacies for themselves - ones that have nothing to do with bestiality. ![]() The tape - if not already ruined - could conceivably be preserved, but it’s been 15 years already, what will remain of the memories in another 30, 40, or 50 years? Probably nothing. All that remains of Miscellaneous nowadays is this tape and our memories. ![]() My brother, who moonlighted as our tour manager, had printed up a few band shirts for us, but those are long gone. No doubt their lack of enthusiasm had something to do with the fact that we never bothered to learn how to play our instruments. We dressed in retail uniforms procured from a local Orlando thrift store and sang tongue-in-cheek songs about bestiality to audiences more interested in the nightly drink special than whatever was on stage. Miscellaneous was an indie-emo joke band in the style of Weezer and Tenacious D. I know what’s on the tape: it contains concert footage of the band my friend Evan and I formed in the early 2000s. ![]() It’s been ages since I’ve owned a VHS player - or an 8 mm adapter, for that matter - not that it’s necessary. NOT TOO LONG AGO, while doing some light spring cleaning, I came across an 8 mm tape from my college years. ![]()

![]() Though Leto tries to make his plan work, he loses to the House Harkonnen after betrayal by a close ally. Though Leto knows who his enemies are, he goes to Arrakis and tries to protect his family by joining forces with the Fremen, the original inhabitants of the planet Arrakis. ![]() However, Leto is sure his enemies are plotting against him. Obeying the command, Paul’s father, Leto, decides to leave Caladan, his home planet, for Arrakis. ‘Dune’ focuses on the story of Paul Atreides, the young heir to House Atreides whose father gets assigned by Shaddam IV, the Emperor, to govern the planet Arrakis, a desert world with a crucial commodity called Melange. With the spread of humans, noble houses are formed, with each governing a planetary system. In the novel, humanity becomes so advanced that it spreads across the known universe. ‘Dune’ is a literary piece of science fiction that tells the story of humanity thousands of years into the future. Frank Herbert’s intentional lack of focus on the technology and more on the characters and how they interacted with the story makes ‘ Dune‘ even better. Known for its accurate description of events, ‘Dune’s’ storytelling style has almost no rivals. ![]() ![]() ![]() "There is so much happening in the world. ★ " An engaging read that speaks to worries of burgeoning self-identity and tween change." - Publishers Weekly, starred review ★ "Johnson and Wright have expertly teamed up to create a relatable story for all middle schoolers." - The Horn Book, starred review Expect high demand from fans of comics like those by Svetlana Chmakova, Jerry Craft, and Raina Telgemeier." - School Library Journal, starred review ★ "A must-read for middle grade comics lovers.
